Moalboal is one of those places that feels up and coming in tourism hotspots, like Bali 20 years ago. Tucked on the southwest coast of Cebu Island, it’s known for its insane marine life, cafe culture, and relaxed vibes. If you’re heading to the Philippines, don’t skip this spot. Here’s what to do while you’re there.

1. Swim with the Sardine Run
One of the reasons Moalboal has become a tourist destination is the incredible diving and snorkelling available, right off Panagsama Beach is one of the most famous sites, the sardine run. Hundreds of thousands of sardines swim in hypnotising unison on the reef wall just 100m from shore.
You can simply rent a snorkel (and reef shoes would be advised) and swim straight out to see this phenomenon. This is a safe activity as the currents are not too strong and you won’t be alone in the water, their are many boats and other snorkellers around.
If you have your diving certification this is a wonderful dive, not only will you see the sardine run but you’ll drift along the coral wall and likely see turtles, lobster, lion fish and much more!
We dove with Cebu Fun Divers and can recommend them.
2. Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls

A short drive from Moalboal gets you to Badian, where you’ll spend a few hours hiking, sliding down rocks, cliff jumping, and floating through a canyon straight out of a movie.
This was a highlight of the Philippines, not only are the falls stunningly beautiful but the adrenaline rush and fun guides really make this experience unique.
You need to book a tour for this activity as entrance to Kawasan Falls is prohibited without a guide. This day tour includes hotel pick-up and canyoneering and lunch
3. Chill at White Beach
Panagsama is great for diving and snorkeling, but if you’re after proper sunbathing or swimming, head to White Beach. It’s got soft sand, calm water, and way fewer people. Pack snacks and spend the afternoon doing… basically nothing.

4. Go Diving (if you’re certified – or want to be)
Moalboal is a diver’s dream. Amazing water clarity, beautiful and lively dive sites, and affordble prices. Many people base themselves in Moalboal to become diving certified due to the affordable price. But if you’re already qualified you’ll want to schedule in a few dives to explore the area. There are plenty of dive shops in town we dove with Cebu Fun Divers and can recommend them.

5. Rent a Scooter and Just Explore
The best way to explore on your own is by renting a scooter, ask at your hotel to make sure you’re getting a fair price and renting from a trustworthy provider. Discover beautiful beaches, ocean views and local villages by heading South from Moalboal.
If you’re renting a scooter make sure you’re covered with travel health insurance! We love SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, it’s affordable, flexible and covers all the things you need,

Where to Stay
Panagsama Beach is where most of the action is. Stay near the water if you want easy snorkel access, or head inland for quieter guesthouses and better prices. We stay inland and rented a scooter, this allowed us to have a nicer, more affordable accommodation but still able to access everywhere at our leisure.
